Fifty Claps
Medium’s new recommendation system has been met with a mixed response, to say the least. To some, it feels like an over-commoditization of their work.
I dislike how it feels like a “points” system. What kind of writing should I be giving — for example — twenty claps towards? Or just five? Or all fifty?
I enjoy recommending work I enjoy because it gives a feeling of gratitude and appreciation to the creator. But when you can give a specific metric, it feels instead like you’re quietly saying to them: This is good, but not forty-claps good.
That’s why I give out the fifty maximum claps to everything I would have otherwise hearted. That way it still feels like sincere appreciation. Perhaps in the future, Medium will penalize this sort of behaviour — or give you a total maximum claps. For now, I’ll just be spreading as much appreciation as I can. ♥
