Optimism Culture
I disagree. Having the ability to downvote does not suddenly cause an uprise of troll/hate culture. Reddit has one of the most constructive comment on the Internet, YouTube has one of the least — they both allow users to downvote.
Example of Use: When I traverse through the latest stories through certain tags, I often see a handful of spam articles — sometimes they’re just URL links to pirated media, sometimes they’re badly written SEO garbage. These are the kind of articles that would benefit from having a downvote function. It would be a lot quicker and easier than reporting each individual story.
The audience, and subsequently the culture, of a website dictates how upvoting/downvoting functions operate, not the other way around. If I disagreed with a story, I’d respond to it with why I disagree (like this response) instead of just downvoting.
